  Stopped in today on a whim and was quoted $3200 for a shorkie puppy. They make a big deal out of how they create good lives for pets but had a number of red flags that go with puppy mill dogs. The one we looked at was from a place called “Holmes for canine” in Ohio. Could not find any references to this Kennel online. Between the lack of return policy, sky high prices, and misleading claims of the company... we could not in good consciousness move forward. **Update** a friend informed me that her vet worked for this company when they first opened— apparently the prices are 3x the norm because 1/3 of the price goes to the breeder, 1/3 goes to the broker or middleman, and 1/3 goes to Petland — and many of their puppies have died from illnesses after customers were told they had a clean bill of health. Found an article from Fairfax City Patch confirming that supposedly medically sound puppies showed medical issues in checkups immediately after adoption (and died!). Buyer beware and I’ll be checking with the Virginia consumer protection bureau to see if they are looking into this! Crazy.
